i’m still going out to the rockaways every few days & it’s still bad.
the volunteers are all amazing though…from the little 8-year-olds working side by side with their parents organizing all the donations, to the 4 firemen from iowa who drove 20+ hours straight to get to nyc to pitch in, to the sanitation guys working in the pitch black to haul out the debris, to veterans who help people clean out their basements.
i am in awe of sense of community, generosity & compassion.
the picture above is of a 67-year-old woman in her home. not only was her basement flooded, but so was her first floor. two volunteer medics made a house call to check on her husband, a retired fireman with health issues. a huge concern for the community is respiratory related illnesses from the mold, asbestos & dust.
